UNDP and bmobile-vodafone partner to further Sustainable Development GoalsMar 30, 2017
Port Moresby, March 30, 2017 - A special edition of top-up cards to promote the Sustainable Development Goals in Papua New Guinea is being released next month as part of a new partnership between The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and bmobile-vodafone.
The partnership will harness the power of mobile network and reach out to communities in PNG with information about 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted by Papua New Guinea and 192 other UN Member states in 2015 and came into effect in January 2016.
The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.
The new bmobile-vodafone top-up cards, also known as topkads, will feature logos for the UNDP and SDGs and 2.5 million cards be made available in early April 2017. Each time a customer recharges using the cards they will be sent information about one of the 17 SDGs and automatically enter into draw to win extra data.
“The SDGs were adopted at the global level, but it is up to countries and their citizens about how best to achieve them. Getting together with local partners such as bmobile-vodafone will help us to promote the Goals, reach out to remote communities and encourage action at various levels,” said Roy Trivedy, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in PNG.
“This campaign is an exciting opportunity to encourage Papua New Guineans to become agents of change and contribute to the effective implementation of the SDGs,” Mr Trivedy said.
bmobile-vodafone Group CEO, Sundar Ramamurthy said: “We are pleased to be partnering with the United Nations Development Programme and look forward to more opportunities to work jointly together. Vodafone has been partnering with the UN for over 10 years across 25 nations, with this campaign, we are extending that global association to Papua New Guinea.”
The campaign is part of wider work of the UN/UNDP to support Papua New Guinea in achieving the SDGs. UNDP works closely with the Government, civil society, business community and other partners to build partnerships, provide strategic advice and advocate for the Global Goals.Contact information
