UN launches Be The Change campaign to drive action on the Sustainable Development Goals in PNGNov 10, 2016
Port Moresby, November 9, 2016 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched new campaign to inspire individual citizens, the Government, civil society and business leaders in Papua New Guinea to collectively realize their promise on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The new campaign – Be The Change – is an educational campaign, that will provide simple tips on how everyone in PNG can contribute to the SDGs.
“The Goals were adopted at the global level, but it is up to everyone – civil society, businesses and citizens alike – to achieve them. That is why we think Be The Change campaign is timely. If we want to succeed in the Global Goals, we need to start acting now and at all levels” said Roy Trivedy, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in PNG.
The campaign will be running on UNDP in PNG Facebook page and website and though the use of multimedia tools such as short animation videos and infographics provide pathways for sustainable development.
It’s first video has already received more than 1100 views, and provided simple tips on how individuals can make more sustainable choices. This includes:
- Say “No” to plastic – a single plastic bag takes 1000 years to degrade, it pollutes our oceans and lands. Advice: use PNG made bilums instead of plastic bags and eliminate plastic cups and dishes.
- Save water – only 1% of water are available for human use. Advice: take shorter showers, use water in short bursts, close taps tightly.
- Save electricity – it produces emissions, that cause climate change. Advice: Unplug appliances when not in use, install solar panels when possible, eat less meat and poultry – it needs more resource to be produced than plants.
“It is critical to the success of the Global Goals that all citizens are actively engaged in the achievement of the SDGs by 2030. By introducing Be The Change campaign, we want to give everyone, everywhere in PNG opportunity to take actions for sustainable development” added Roy Trivedy.
Be The Change campaign is part of wider work of UNDP to support Papua New Guinea in achieving the SDGs. It is working closely with the Department of National Planning and Monitoring and other partners to “bring SDGs home” through connecting with global network of experts, building new partnerships, supporting SDG localization and providing strategic advice on the Global Goals.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a set of global goals to transform the world. Adopted in 2015 by the UN Member States, including Papua New Guinea, they aim to mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.
The new Goals are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and addresses a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.
