National Parliament hosts first practice session for women

The National Parliament hosted a historic first-ever Practice Parliament Session for Women today. The Hon Deputy Speaker John Simon welcomed 50 women from different parts of the country, who are intending to run as candidates in the upcoming elections, into the parliamentary state function room to participate in a mock session. The women have spent the last week undertaking training and skills development on both policy and parliamentary issues.

Representatives from the Papua New Guinea Government, the United Nations and the National Parliament came together to welcome female candidates from across the country in the opening ceremony of the 2017 National Practice Parliament for women programme. Fifty candidates who intend to run in the 2017 national elections have been selected for the five day programme from 7-11 March, which is now in its second year. Participants will be trained in critical national policy issues, parliamentary processes and campaign strategies.

Fifty female candidates who intend to run in the 2017 national elections have been selected to participate in a week of training on parliamentary processes. In a highly competitive process, participants from 22 provinces were selected from over 200 applicants and will betrained on critical national policy issues, parliamentary processes and campaign strategies from 6 to 13 March 2017 in Port Moresby.
