Mapping the Oil and Gas Industry to the SDGs: An Atlas

July 26, 2017

A new joint report on “Mapping the Oil and Gas Industry to the SDGs: An Atlas” has been launched by UNDP together with its partners IPIECA (global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The oil and gas industry is in many ways central to the challenge of achieving the SDGs. On one hand it is an important provider of the energy needed to achieve economic growth, poverty reduction and many of the other goals. On the other hand it is of course a main contributor to climate change and other environmental challenges. The new report illustrates how the industry can take practical and concrete action on all of the goals by integrating them into core business operations and by collaborating with other stakeholders.

This Atlas will serve as an important advocacy and awareness raising tool for companies, governments and other stakeholders about the sector’s role in contributing to the SDGs. We also aim to use it to inform constructive multi-stakeholder dialogue and collaboration in oil and gas rich countries as they develop and implement their national SDG plans.
